We are excited to announce the winner of our Ethel Payne/Gordon Parks coloring contest: Anna.
We launched the contest during our time at the Indiana Black Expo in July. Contestants had to finish one of two sheets of the Black journalism icons for the chance to win $50 and a LIFT swag pack.
From freelance writing to radio and television broadcasting, Payne (known as the “First Lady of the Black Press”) spent her career breaking barriers to deliver the news. In 2023, the White House press briefing lectern was named after her and fellow Black woman trailblazer Alice Dunnigan, who were the first Black women to serve as White House correspondents.
Parks was best known for his contributions to photojournalism. He captured revolutionary images of Black people, poor and working classes. Parks even went on to be one of the first Black directors in Hollywood.
We chose to lift the legacies of these 20th century Black journalism giants in our mission to lift and encourage young people to #SeeNewsDifferently.
